Are Cottonsie® disposable diapers biodegradable?

The cotton components in Cottonsie® diapers are biodegradable, while the minimal plastic materials used in the closure system, film layer, and spandex leg cuffs are not. The inner absorbent core is made with biodegradable wood pulp and incorporates a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) that has been shown to biodegrade in under 18 months under ASTM-D 5338 conditions. This design significantly reduces the portion of the diaper that will remain in a landfill.

How long do diapers take to decompose?

Most diapers on the market are made of synthetic materials that take centuries to decompose, though all disposable diapers use a substantial amount of wood pulp in the core that is readily biodegradable once the plastic encapsulating it breaks and exposes the wood to natural elements. However, diapers that use additional natural, cellulosic components in their products, such as Cottonsie®, will biodegrade more rapidly. Of course, the synthetic materials used in Cottonsie® diapers are not biodegradable, but the overall environmental impact will be substantially lower the more cellulosic materials that are used.
