Frequently Asked Questions About Cottonsie™ Diapers

No, this white gel-like substance is a high-quality super absorbent polymer (SAP) that has been safety tested and is nontoxic and not harmful to the skin. Disposable diapers are designed to transfer moisture from the top layers and into the core, away from the skin. Within the core, the SAP helps lock moisture away from the skin by expanding into a gel-like substance that can increase by up to 300 times its weight to hold moisture. If these gel beads get on the skin, they are safe and can be gently wiped away with a damp cloth.

In our opinion, cotton’s sustainability quotient is extremely high. Not only does cotton biodegrade quickly, but it is harvested within a single growing season as compared to cellulosic, wood-based fibers such as bamboo and other types of wood that can take between 10 and 20 years to mature. In addition, a majority of our cotton is sourced from the southern United States, where rainfall is plentiful during the growth season to minimize the need for irrigation that is energy intensive or depletes local water supplies.

Natural cotton is extremely soft and comfortable, and breathable, which has the potential to foster a better microclimate by reducing heat and humidity.

Under 10% of the materials in a Cottonsie™ disposable diaper contain polyethylene or polypropylene (i.e. standard plastic). The plastic in our diapers is mainly concentrated in the tab closure system because, in our estimation, plastic tab closure systems offer the highest level of safety and efficacy to best protect babies.

Yes, as compared to the plastic that makes up a majority of a conventional diapers’ components, cotton is an all-natural fiber that is minimally processed and biodegrades quickly. In contrast to cotton, the polyethylene and polypropylene (i.e. plastic) manufacturing process requires high energy consumption and extensive processing, including the operation of high temperature heat exchangers, fluid bed reactors, chemical catalysts, compressors, and hydrogen co-monomers, among other chemical synthesization components and processes that are typically involved in the manufacturing process.

Our diapers are made of 65% plant-based materials, which includes the cotton top sheet, cotton back sheet, core wrap, and cotton acquisition distribution layer (ADL), in addition to the cellulosic wood fluff pulp that is concentrated in the core of the diaper to lock away moisture from a baby’s skin.

Nonwoven materials are widely used in the manufacture of disposable diapers, but almost all manufacturers use plastic nonwovens rather than nonwovens made entirely from all-natural cotton. At Cottonsie™, we only use nonwovens in our diapers that are made from cotton, allowing for a soft, natural 100% cotton top sheet (the liner) and back sheet that dramatically reduces your baby’s exposure to plastic.

Cotton nonwovens are an innovative and relatively novel fabric that is not widely used. Cotton’s high absorbency rate typically makes it a poor fiber for construction of a diaper. Unlike our premium diaper, natural fibers in diapers typically result in an unacceptable level of moisture within the top sheet (i.e. the inner liner) that is next to the skin. This may be the reason why most diaper manufacturers continue to rely heavily on plastic to maintain a dry liner. However, with our patent-pending technology, Cottonsie™ diapers are designed to work as a complete system to expertly transfer moisture and mess from the top layer of the diaper, which is cotton, and into the core, where moisture is locked away from a baby’s skin. Cottonsie™ has managed to solve the age-old problem with cotton, keeping babies dry and leak free!

Yes, cotton is a completely natural fiber grown on farms, not synthesized in a lab or factory, which means it is 100% biodegradable.

82% of Cottonsie™ diapers biodegrade within 18 months. While many landfills are packed with trash that restricts airflow and access to water and sunlight to help break down materials, the majority of our diaper is designed to biodegrade in under 18 months – even in such constricted environments. Our cotton fibers easily degrade in most conditions, as does the wood fluff pulp that makes up the core of the diaper. In addition to our biodegradable plant-based ingredients, we have sourced a high-quality, environmentally-friendly superabsorbent polymer that is derived from acrylates that degrade relatively quickly. However, the minimal plastic components (under 10%), which are included in our diaper’s design for safety and efficacy will unfortunately remain in a landfill because, to date, we have been unable to identify a suitable eco-friendly replacement. We will continue to research our options as we develop new technologies that address our concerns about safety and quality.
